The South West of England has a lot going for it, not least the fact that it lies at the junction of the M4 and M5 motorways and is just a few hours from London, the Midlands and South Wales. With a thriving arts scene and diverse industrial base, many jobs in the South West are concentrated around the city of Bristol.

A port city, Bristol has a long tradition of being at the forefront of British industry and exploration, and it was from here that John Cabot set off to discover Canada. With living costs far lower than London, and a cosmopolitan and relaxed atmosphere combined with easy access to the coast, jobs in Bristol are highly sought after. New industries have moved in to take the place of shipping, and Bristol is now home to BAE Systems at Filton, where the Airbus A380 is constructed.

The strongest element represented by jobs in Bristol is within the financial sector, accounting for 25% of the workforce, while the public sector is represented by the Ministry of Defence, the University of the West of England and the North Bristol NHS Trust. Amazingly, around 15% of jobs in the South West are taken up by the tourism sector, along with retail and catering for incoming visitors. The financial hub of the city is located in the Temple Meads area, and firms who have chosen to locate their UK headquarters in Bristol include Hewlett-Packard laboratories, along with around 400 other hi-tech industries.
